The Doctor is baffled when a young woman is transported to the TARDIS on her wedding day, and attempts to find out how she is connected to an alien plot to destroy Earth. Unfortunately, he's lying in a coma in Jackie's home. I know the general climate here is against "it's all a dream" theories, but I couldn't pass this one off since it is actually implied by the episode in question. It's Christmas Eve, but this is to be a far from silent night - the cruel Sycorax have come to Earth to enslave mankind and, as ever, only The Doctor can stop them. Particularly since the ending goes all inception with the tangerine in the last shot of the episode- as the Doctor takes Clara by the hand and brings her on to more adventure. He is like the robots at the twin streams facility- killing his companions with kindness. He realises subconsciously that acting as the protagonist as he always has is actually hurting his companions in the long term, which is what is causing the moral dilemma that he seems to be wracked with. The Doctor starts fighting the delusions to save Clara, which ties in to the overarching theme of Is he a good man?

He is the main antagonist of a shared delusion- and every time a companion dies or leaves the series permanently is because their brains have been eaten by the space crabs. What if the Doctor, much like Santa is an artefact of the delusion that is designed to pull people into the zany adventures while their brains are being melted on the inside? He says that the entire scenario is ridiculous- north pole, elves, a blue box time machine that's bigger on the inside- The Doctor clearly taking indignation at the last point. It has already been established in the episode that different people at different times attacked by the Dream Crabs can share their hallucinations across time and space, and that for instance, Santa acts as you would expect him to until the jig is up, then he tells everyone quite bluntly that the jig is up. My theory is this- The Doctor is actually a construct of the Dream Crabs shared dreams.

The catch is that even after you wake up you can still be dreaming- and you can have an entire life programmed into that time- just like Clara waking up with an extra 60 years or so in her memory. Now the big reveal at the end of the episode is that they are all sharing a dream, and that Santa Claus is a part of your brain that lets you know you are dreaming and to try and get you to wake up. They essentially look like face huggers from Alien, and they attack you and eat your brains, but anaesthetise you by placing you inside a dream (within a dream within a dream) to keep you from struggling or breaking out. Okay so for anybody who has seen the Christmas special episode "The Last Christmas" you know that the main antagonists of the episode are the dream crabs.
